There are 5 main skin types. It’s a dynamic concept, since it can vary from time to time, depending on different aspects as age, stress levels, diet, skin care routine, health issues and even the weather. This means that throughout your life you should assess you skin type more than once, as it’s likely possible to change.

Here I’ll try to simplify this matter to help you define your present skin type easily.

1 – Normal Skin

It’s when you know and feel your skin is balanced and radiant, neither dry nor oily. It might even be as if pores are invisible, no sensitive areas or imperfections. Yes, the key word is: balance! No need for extra care.

2 – Dry Skin

This skin type is simple to recognise by its lack of natural shine, almost dull appearance. It’s less resilient, revealing therefore more expression lines. Dry skin can expose sensitive areas, such as red spots, peeling or even scaly skin areas.

It could be a result of internal aspects as aging, hormonal issues or medication related, or can be caused by external factors as environmental conditions (cold, wind, UV radiation) or even soaps and cleansers.

Two elemental things can be done in order to regulate dry skin. One is to reduce the exposure of your skin to soaps and cleansers, specially the industrial made. Prefer natural products, as they are less manipulated/processed and therefore less harmful to your skin. Keep in mind that if you have dry skin probably it isn’t producing enough natural skin oils to protect it, consequently there’s no need for more than one shower or quick bath a day. I recommend you check this DIY coconut oil cleanser, a natural alternative that is great even with eczema skin. Coconut & Honey Cleanser. The second is to apply a good moisturiser, so that your skin can hydrate and restore its harmony. Once again you can buy your skin care products at your local store, or you can make them. An excellent naturals moisturiser for every skin type is DIY Coconut & Lemon Moisturiser.

3 – Oily Skin

Oily skin is easy to identify, it look as if it’s an extra shiny skin. This type of skin is associated with issues like pimples, blackheads or even big visible pores.

Many factors can promote oily skin, some internal as hormonal issues and stress, and some external as the weather conditions.

Care basics for this skin type are to shower or bathe at least once or twice a day, and whenever you feel like you’ve sweat abundantly. To choose carefully your skin care products, skin type specific, or make your own natural versions as the ones I suggested before.

4 – Mixed Skin

This is a very common skin type, as the name suggests it’s a mixture of oily and dry skin. It’s more obvious when you can identify a T-zone in your face, observe your forehead, nose and chin, check these areas for oily skin, if the other areas of your face are dry, the mystery is solved. You have mixed skin type. It’s a combination of the last two skin types explained before, therefore they share the same causes and skin care advises. Once again I recommend natural products.

5 – Sensitive Skin

When you have a sensitive skin type your skin is usually dry, with redness areas, that might be itchy, as in eczema. Generally this is due to atopic issues, meaning it’s allergy related, so it’s important to find out what is causing the problem. I recommend you consult a physician, a dermatologist.

Hope this post helps you better understand your skin type, as to get the best skin results ever. Don’t forget to check Skin Care Basics.
